The tea production areas in Fujian Province are classified into three categories.
Wuyi Mountain
Fuzhou and Fuding
Anxi
Wuyi Mountain is known for its famous Wuyi oolong tea, also known as rock tea, and for being the birthplace of Lapsang Souchong, the world's first black tea.
However, the production areas for oolong tea and black tea are not the same. Wuyi oolong tea is produced in the UNESCO World Heritage area, while Lapsang Souchong is produced in Tongmuguan, Xingcun Town.
Wuyi oolong tea strongly benefits from the mineral content of the rocks formed by the uplift of the sea bed, whereas Lapsang Souchong, grown at an altitude of around 1000 meters, has the unique characteristics of high mountain tea.
Fuzhou and Fuding are known for producing base tea leaves for jasmine tea, white tea, and also relatively affordable black tea.
Anxi is a major oolong tea production area, alongside Wuyi Mountain and Chaozhou (Fenghuang Dancong), making it one of China's three major oolong tea regions. Anxi is especially famous for its Tie Guan Yin.
